An EV Loaded With Personality

You'd be forgiven for not recognizing that the e-Golf is an electric vehicle at first glance. After all, it doesn't offer quirky styling that screams, "I'm different!" Nor does it suffer from a letdown in performance and driving dynamics, as so many of its class competitors seem to. No, the only way to tell the e-Golf apart from any other vehicle is when you notice that it only seems to stop at a gas station when the occupants need refreshments.

The exterior styling is pure Golf, boasting the same unique hatch and sleek lines as its gas-powered siblings. Available LED headlights feature blue accents, while the bold LED taillights are energy-efficient. The e-Golf gets specially-designed 16-inch alloy wheels that help smooth out our ride, while the electrically-heated windshield can be turned on remotely -- allowing your window to be completely defrosted by the time you sit inside.

The interior gets standout accents like an e-Golf emblem in front of the shifter and a blue-accented shift knob to differentiate the e-Golf from other Golf family models. One of the biggest complaints we hear about electric vehicles is the loss of interior space due to the battery placement. VW knows how annoying that can be, so they designed the e-Golf to offer 52.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded down and the adjustable cargo floor is lowered. It's nice to know that you don't have to sacrifice comfort and cargo capacity when you choose to drive electric.

The e-Golf can be charged at either a 120-volt or a 240-volt outlet, with a full charge taking less than six hours on a 240-volt outlet. The vehicle is surprisingly responsive, thanks to power that goes directly to the wheels, and the 100 kW AC electric motor generates 134 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is outstanding, as you'd expect, with an EPA-estimated MPGe of 126 city and 111 highway. Boasting an EPA-estimated range of 125 miles, you'll have no trouble in making a commute from San Jose to Palo Alto and back.

There are three drive modes available, helping you find the perfect balance between performance and range. Normal mode emphasizes e-Golf performance, Eco mode offers a balance between the two, and Eco+ mode delivers more conservative battery use. Regenerative braking converts the energy expended when you brake or lift your foot off the pedal, helping recharge the batteries.

The e-Golf is a marvel of safety and driver-assisting technologies and is constructed with front and rear crumple zones that absorb crash energy and a safety cage that redirects that energy away from the driver and passengers. Automatic Post-Collision Braking System helps stop your e-Golf after a collision, helping to prevent subsequent impacts. The Intelligent Crash Response System acts when a collision deploys the airbags, turning off the fuel pump, unlocking the doors, and activating your hazard lights. There are seven stability-enhancing systems that help you stay in control of your e-Golf, while the Tire Pressure Monitoring System alerts you to any tire pressure loss, which can inhibit efficiency and safety.
