Clean Diesel technology… it’s what the people want.
After not being available in California for five years , Volkswagen has now reintroduced a diesel fuel vehicle to this market. Much work has been done to make this very popular european powerplant compliant with strict California emission standards. Forget what you remember about diesel powered cars of the past, our new Clean Diesel TDI will set new standards for fuel efficiency and performance. On this page, we would like to address some topics that many clients often ask about diesel powered vehicles.
Why, When and What Vehicles...
Why.
Diesels are known for delivering excellent gas mileage while providing good performance. But they also have a legacy of being noisy and leave a thick trail of stinking black smoke. What if we took all the good parts of diesel engine reliability, performance, fuel efficiency and removed the noise, smell and smoke. Well that’s what VW’s clean diesel technology is all about. First of all, it is important to know that the diesel fuel now at fueling stations in the United States, has 97% less sulfur than it did a year ago. This has virtually eliminated the bad smell of exhaust and greatly assisted engineers to make diesel emissions cleaner. OK, so why not by a hybrid that still offers better fuel economy and takes regular gas which is currently less expensive than diesel? Well, that’s an easy answer. Actually, there are many answers to that question but we’ll go with the easy one first. In a word, Performance. Our new clean diesel Jetta’s deliver great gas mileage while delivering acceleration and handling that you would expect from a performance car. These new generation vehicles greatly outperform our prior diesel offerings. You will really be surprised when you get behind the wheel of one of these cars! But beyond performance, we have a feeling that the current state of “hybrid” technology is not for everyone. Yes, we will have a hybrid within a few years, but its drive train will be significantly different from what is the current state of the art for hybrid technology. On the fuel price issue, we believe many owners will experience gas mileage efficiency far greater than what is listed on the window sticker and will easily overcome the cost/benefit analysis of the extra dollar you pay for diesel fuel.
By the way, the 2009 EPA gas mileage rating for a new Jetta Clean Diesel will be 30city and 41hwy for a 6 speed manual transmissions and 29city and 40hwy for an automatic (s6). Third party real world tests are coming in and easily showing higher ratings for these vehicles.

Let’s end the guessing game of what vehicles will be available with diesel…
There’s a lot of talk about what Volkswagen vehicles will be available in California with this new technology. We are often surprised at what our clients are being told by other dealers. Well let’s clear this issue up. First of all, Volkswagen’s clean diesel technology is certified for use in all 50 states. So from now on, Volkswagen diesels sold in this country will also be available right here in the golden state. As to what Volkswagen vehicles will be available, we can provide a short term answer with great certainty. The Jetta Sedan and Jetta Sportwagen are now available with this new powerplant. Then, in the spring of 2009, we will receive the Touareg 2 with a V6 3.0liter clean diesel (with urea injection). These are currently the only VW diesel vehicles on the drawing board for our market. Now obviously Volkswagen makes almost every car we sell in the U.S. with a diesel for other markets. But right now, our two Jetta models and the Touareg 2 V6 are it. If we had to guess as to which model not slated for diesel now would be the next in-line to get it here in the U.S., we would say Tiguan is it, but again, currently there are no plans for this model to receive diesel in the United States.
Diesel Fuel Availability...
Wondering where diesel fuel is available? We like this site www.gaspricewatch.com for quickly finding stations in any particular area. Simply enter your zip code, select "diesel" in the drop down box and you will see how many diesel stations are in your area (along with pricing). Generally, availability has never been a problem if you are a little "tuned-in" to who carries diesel and remember, more stations are adding this fuel every day as more diesel vehicles become available.
